What NSF/ANSI 61 certifies

NSF/ANSI 61 is the health-effects standard for products and materials that contact drinking water. It evaluates whether a material leaches contaminants into potable water above levels considered safe for human health. Certification means the material is judged safe for use in drinking-water system components such as valves, meters, pumps, and fittings. The standard addresses health effects, not sealing performance, so an NSF-61 grade still has to be matched to the pressure, temperature, and chemistry of the application.

O-Ring compounds that meet it

NSF-61 compliant O-Rings are typically made from a small set of base elastomers, in peroxide-cured or specifically approved grades:

  • EPDM, a common choice for hot and cold potable water
  • Nitrile (NBR), in approved drinking-water grades
